About this fish
About this fish
Ribbon Eel Blue Med is a marine ribbon eel for the home saltwater aquarium, sold under the common name for Rhinomuraena quesita (Blue Ribbon Eel). In a reef or fish system, it functions as a dramatic, rockwork-dwelling predator whose practical value is its active, head-out hunting behavior once settled in. Because ribbon eels can be challenging to establish, this eel is typically best suited for experienced keepers who can provide an appropriate setup and feeding routine.
Features:
- Spends most of the day in the rockwork with only the head visible, creating a natural “emerge and watch” display
- Predatory by nature and will eat small fish and crustaceans, so tankmates must be chosen carefully
- Needs plenty of cave space and secure rock structure to retreat into
- Often hard to get feeding, so be prepared to offer suitable meaty foods and assist with acceptance
- Escape artist: cover every gap in the lid to help prevent unwanted wandering out of the aquarium
- When introduced, acclimate slowly and give it a quiet spot to settle before expecting consistent feeding
Specifications:
- Scientific name (verified): Rhinomuraena quesita
- Care level (group guidance): Experienced keepers (ribbon eels can be hard to get feeding)
- Temperament: Predator; may eat small fish and crustaceans
- Placement: Mostly in rockwork/caves, with head visible
- Diet: Meaty foods such as frozen silversides, squid, and shrimp; typically fed a few times a week
- Aquarium security: Lid must be well-covered with no gaps (escape risk)
- Tank setup requirement (group guidance): Large, mature tank with plenty of caves
