About this fish
About this fish
Spotted Mandarin Dragonet (Synchiropus picturatus) is a small, peaceful goby for the home saltwater aquarium. It’s prized for its natural foraging behavior—often picking over live rock, perching on corals/rocks, and eating from the sand bed. In practice, this fish is most useful in reef-style tanks that can support its specialized diet of live copepods, making a mature display tank (and/or a refugium) an ideal setup.
Features:
- Peaceful temperament that generally fits well in many reef tanks
- Natural behavior includes perching on rocks or corals and sifting the substrate
- Will readily hunt for live copepods, so it helps to have a well-established system
- Can also accept small frozen foods such as mysis and copepods when properly transitioned
- Often benefits from a tank rich in natural food and hiding/foraging areas
- Needs a tight lid, since many gobies can jump
- Best added to a mature tank where copepods are available to support long-term feeding
