About this fish
About this fish
Meet the Sohal Tang, the classic reef tang sold under the scientific name Acanthurus sohal. As an active tang in the Tangs & Surgeonfish group, it’s a strong choice for saltwater aquariums where you want an energetic grazer that helps keep algae in check while adding a bold, reef-style presence. Because this species is a continual swimmer and algae nibbler, it’s best suited to tanks with plenty of open swimming room and stable, well-established conditions. In a reef setup, tangs are commonly considered reef safe with corals, making the Sohal Tang a practical centerpiece fish when paired thoughtfully with compatible tankmates.
Features:
- Active, constant swimmer that benefits from open, spacious swimming areas
- Grazes algae throughout the day, helping support a natural feeding routine in the aquarium
- Diet can be built around algae sheets and seaweed, supplemented with frozen and pellet foods
- Has a sharp spine near the tail; handle with care and plan for safe netting and transfers
- Can be territorial toward other tangs, so tankmate selection matters
- Generally reef safe with corals, making it compatible with many reef aquariums
