About this fish
About this fish
Desjardini Tang Africa is a saltwater tang sold in your aquarium shop under the scientific name Zebrasoma desjardinii. It’s an active, algae-grazing fish that helps keep nuisance algae in check while also adding an eye-catching presence to a reef-style setup. In practical terms, it’s a grazing swimmer best suited for tanks with plenty of open swimming room, where it can continually pick at available plant matter and prepared foods. This tang is commonly used by reef hobbyists as a “grazer” alongside live rock and other reef-compatible species.
Features:
- Active, open-water swimmer that benefits from a long tank with space to move
- Grazer that naturally spends much of the day feeding on algae
- Accepts a varied diet including algae sheets and seaweed, plus frozen and pellet foods
- Has a sharp spine near the tail—use care when netting and during tank handling
- Can be territorial toward other tangs, so tankmates should be chosen thoughtfully
- Generally considered reef safe with corals, making it useful in coral display tanks
