Seachem Matrix Carbon 250mL (106) is an activated carbon filter media designed to help remove dissolved organic compounds from aquarium water. As a macroporous, bituminous-coal–based carbon made into spherical beads, it’s intended to provide strong adsorption performance while maintaining good water flow through the filter media bed. In practical filtration setups, it’s used in chemical/mechanical filtration stages to clear the water of organics that can contribute to odor and discoloration.
Features:
- Spherical, bead-shaped activated carbon helps prevent media from packing so water can keep flowing efficiently
- Macroporous structure supports adsorption of a range of larger organic molecules
- Very low ash content is designed to minimize impact on aquarium pH
- Low leachable phosphate is highlighted as having the lowest detectable leachable phosphate among major carbon brands tested
- High density of macroporous binding sites supports strong overall removal capacity
- Bituminous coal-based carbon is identified as macroporous (as opposed to coconut/organic sources that form microporous carbons)
- Sized so water penetrates fully while small particles are less likely to escape standard filter bags
Specifications:
- Product: Activated carbon filter media (spherical bead)
- Form: Macroporous, bituminous coal-based spherical beads
- Impact on pH: Designed for very little pH impact; even in distilled water it does not raise pH above 7.0
- Leachable phosphate: Lowest detectable leachable phosphate content reported among major carbon brands tested
- Container size: 250 mL
