Seachem Cupramine 500mL (563) is a copper-based medication designed to treat external parasites on fish in both freshwater and marine aquariums. It’s commonly used when dealing with ectoparasites such as Ich (Cryptocaryon/Ichthyophthirius), Velvet (Amyloodinium/Piscinoodinium), and other related external parasites. In practical use, Cupramine helps you maintain an effective copper level throughout treatment so the parasite can’t multiply and reinfect the fish.
Features:
- Targets ectoparasites of both freshwater and marine fish, including Oodinium, Cryptocaryon, Amyloodinium, Ichthyophthirius, and others
- Uses a copper form bound on an amine, intended to be less toxic to fish than harsher copper sources
- Remains in solution and is described as non-acidic
- Works at low concentrations, with a reported therapeutic-to-toxic gap (0.2 mg/L vs 0.8 mg/L)
- Designed to be removable using chemical filtration such as carbon or Cuprisorb
- Treatment guidance for common parasites emphasizes maintaining the copper level for the full course
- Is expected to cause visible spots to appear worse before they improve for Ich-type infestations, while treatment continues
