About this fish
About this fish
Powder Brown Tang is a saltwater tang fish sold as Acanthurus japonicus for the home aquarium. As a grazing surgeonfish, it helps satisfy a reef tank’s need for constant algae and can add an active, bold presence as it swims and feeds. This species is commonly kept for its day-to-day grazing behavior—pair it with an aquarium setup that supports regular algae/seaweed feeding and provides open swimming space.
Features:
- Active, continuous swimmers that graze algae throughout the day
- Best use in a saltwater aquarium where frequent seaweed and algae-based meals are available
- Bold, eye-catching reef fish activity that brings movement to the display
- Sharp spine near the tail, so handle with care and avoid stressful interactions
- Can be territorial toward other tangs, especially if tank space is limited
- Most are reef safe with corals, making it a common choice for mixed reef tanks
- Acclimate slowly when it arrives and allow it to settle in a quieter area before introducing it fully to the main tank
Specifications:
- Scientific name: Acanthurus japonicus
- Group: Tangs & Surgeonfish
- Sizes offered: Large, Medium, Small
- Diet: Algae sheets and seaweed daily, plus frozen and pellet foods
- Temperament: Often territorial toward other tangs
- Compatibility note: Most are generally reef safe with corals
