Pistol Shrimp; Tiger – Alpheus sp.

About this invertebrate

Pistol Shrimp; Tiger – Alpheus sp. is a saltwater pistol shrimp (genus Alpheus sp.) sold for aquarists who want an interesting burrower that also adds natural scavenging behavior to a reef or fish system. Because these shrimp are named by variety labels at many retailers, treat “Tiger” as a shop-assigned name while the verified scientific group remains Alpheus sp. In practice, it’s most useful in tanks that can support burrowing—providing deep, stable substrate and compatible tankmates that won’t interfere with its tunnel system.

Features:

• Creates a burrow and will rearrange/renovate the sand and rock structure near its home as it tunnels.
• A scavenging, carnivorous feeder; it benefits from a varied meaty diet and supplemental feeding if food doesn’t readily reach its burrow.
• Well-suited to aquariums that are fully cycled and offer stable, mature conditions before introduction.
• Most often kept as an invertebrate addition to peaceful community tanks, with compatibility depending on the individual shrimp and tankmates.
• Shifts between active foraging and retreating behavior—normal for pistol shrimp to spend much of the day hidden.
• May pair successfully with certain shrimp-goby setups in the hobby, but pairing outcomes can vary; plan as general guidance, not a guarantee.
