About this fish

About this fish

Miniatus Grouper is a predatory reef fish for the home saltwater aquarium, sold under the name Miniatus Grouper (Cephalopholis miniatas). It’s a bottom-to-midwater hunter that’s typically kept in a large fish-only setup because it will treat smaller tankmates as food. In practice, this fish is a great choice if you want a robust centerpiece predator and can provide ample hiding space and appropriately sized companions.

Features:

  • Predatory temperament: will eat fish and crustaceans small enough to swallow
  • Best suited to a large fish-only saltwater tank with plenty of rockwork for cover
  • Generally hardy as a grouper/soapfish relative, but still benefits from calm acclimation and settling time
  • Accepts meaty foods such as frozen silversides, squid, and shrimp
  • Quieter, established hiding spots help reduce stress after arrival
  • Choosing larger, robust tankmates lowers the risk of unwanted predation

Specifications:

  • Care level: Predatory marine fish; generally considered suitable for experienced hobbyists due to feeding and compatibility needs
  • Tank type: Large saltwater fish-only tank recommended
  • Tank requirements: Plenty of rock for hiding and a tank sized to support a growing, active predator
  • Diet: Meaty frozen foods (e.g., silversides, squid, shrimp); feed a few times per week
  • Compatibility: Keep with larger, robust tankmates; avoid small fish and small crustaceans
  • Acclimation: Acclimate slowly and provide a quiet spot to settle
  • Water temperature (general marine guidance): About 75–82°F (24–28°C)
  • Salinity (general marine guidance): About 1.020–1.025 SG
