About this fish

About this fish

FuManChu Lionfish is a venomous, slow-moving marine predator for the home saltwater aquarium. In shops it is commonly sold as Dendrochirus biocellatus, a lionfish/scorpionfish-type fish known for dramatic posture and fin-spine defense. It’s a practical choice for aquarists running a fish-only display because it will recognize and try to eat most appropriately sized tankmates, making feeding-focused, species-managed setups especially important.

Features:

  • Venomous predator with fin spines that can deliver a painful sting—handle with care and seek medical attention if stung.
  • Best kept in a fish-only tank or carefully planned community, since lionfish will eat fish or shrimp that fit in their mouth.
  • Slow, showpiece style swimmer—often enjoyed for its silhouette and hunting behavior rather than constant activity.
  • Typically takes meaty frozen foods; offer appropriately sized silversides, shrimp, and krill.
  • Feed a few times per week with portions the lionfish can consume, helping reduce excess waste.
  • Acclimate slowly and provide a quiet spot to settle in when it arrives.
  • Sturdy, confident feeding response is supported by matching food size to the lionfish’s mouth—avoid forcing large items.
