Aquaforest Phosphate Minus – Phosphate & Silicate Remover
About This Product
The Aquaforest Phosphate Minus is a high-performance filtration media designed to effectively reduce phosphate (PO4) and silicate levels in saltwater reef aquariums. Featuring advanced adsorption technology, this powerful phosphate remover helps maintain balanced water chemistry, control unwanted algae growth, and create a healthier environment for corals, fish, and other marine inhabitants.
Excess phosphate is a common challenge in reef aquariums, often resulting from heavy feeding, fish waste, decomposing organic matter, and aquarium supplements. Elevated phosphate concentrations can contribute to nuisance algae growth, affect coral calcification, and make it more difficult to maintain a clean, visually appealing reef system.
Aquaforest Phosphate Minus works by binding dissolved phosphates and silicates as aquarium water passes through the filtration media. Its high adsorption capacity allows it to remove substantial amounts of unwanted nutrients, helping maintain stable water conditions without the need for liquid phosphate-reducing chemicals.
Suitable for both newly established and mature reef aquariums, Phosphate Minus can help prevent excessive phosphate accumulation in new systems while reducing elevated nutrient concentrations in established tanks. By controlling excess phosphate, the media helps limit conditions that encourage undesirable green algae and cyanobacteria.
Designed primarily for use in fluidized media reactors, Aquaforest Phosphate Minus performs efficiently when exposed to consistent water circulation. It can also be used passively in filter media bags or filter socks, making it suitable for various aquarium filtration configurations.
Unlike some phosphate-removing media, Aquaforest specifically recommends not rinsing Phosphate Minus before use. The brown dust associated with the product contains active phosphate-removing material, and rinsing with RO/DI water can reduce its effectiveness.
Whether you’re maintaining a colorful SPS reef, a mixed coral aquarium, or a marine fish system, Aquaforest Phosphate Minus provides an effective solution for phosphate management and long-term reef aquarium stability.
Features:
- Highly effective phosphate removal binds dissolved phosphate (PO4) to help maintain balanced nutrient levels.
- Reduces silicate concentrations to help manage unwanted dissolved silicates in marine aquarium water.
- Supports algae control by limiting excess phosphate available to nuisance algae.
- Helps discourage cyanobacteria growth by reducing conditions that can contribute to unwanted blooms.
- High adsorption capacity binds substantial amounts of phosphate within the filtration media.
- Suitable for new and established aquariums helps prevent phosphate accumulation and reduce elevated phosphate in mature systems.
- Supports healthy reef conditions by helping maintain appropriate phosphate concentrations for coral growth and coloration.
- Ideal for SPS and LPS reef aquariums where stable nutrient management is important.
- Designed for fluidized media reactors provides efficient phosphate removal with consistent water flow.
- Compatible with filter media bags and socks offers flexible installation in existing filtration systems.
- Helps stabilize water chemistry through consistent management of dissolved phosphates and silicates.
- Manufacturer-described reef-safe formulation designed for use around marine fish, corals, and other aquarium inhabitants when used as directed.
- Simple maintenance requirements with replacement typically recommended every four weeks.
- No pre-rinsing required preserves the effectiveness of the active phosphate-removing material.
- Available in multiple sizes accommodates different aquarium capacities and filtration needs.

| 200 gallons | 189–757ml |
Actual media requirements depend on phosphate concentration, aquarium livestock, feeding habits, and filtration efficiency.
Media Reactor Installation
- Measure the appropriate quantity of Phosphate Minus based on aquarium volume and current phosphate levels.
- Place the media into a compatible fluidized media reactor.
- Establish appropriate water circulation through the reactor. Aquaforest recommends a flow rate of at least 400 liters per hour.
- Allow aquarium water to circulate through the media to begin phosphate and silicate adsorption.
- Test phosphate levels regularly and adjust the amount of media according to the aquarium’s needs.
- Replace the media approximately every four weeks or when phosphate concentrations begin rising significantly.
Passive Filtration Installation
Phosphate Minus may also be placed in a compatible filter media bag or filter sock.
Position the bag in an area of the sump or filtration system that receives consistent water flow. Ensure water can circulate through the media without bypassing it entirely.
Passive filtration may offer different performance compared with a dedicated media reactor, so regular phosphate testing is recommended.
Important Usage Information:
Do not rinse Phosphate Minus before use. Aquaforest states that the brown dust associated with the product contains active phosphate-removing material. Rinsing with RO/DI water may reduce its effectiveness.
A temporary brown discoloration of aquarium water may occur shortly after installing fresh media. According to Aquaforest, this discoloration is harmless to aquarium inhabitants and normally disappears after a short period.
Avoid reducing phosphate concentrations too rapidly, particularly in established reef aquariums. Corals require small amounts of phosphorus for normal biological functions, and excessively low phosphate levels can negatively affect coral health and coloration.
Begin with a conservative amount when treating an aquarium with elevated phosphate and monitor changes with a reliable phosphate test kit.
Maintain regular aquarium maintenance practices, including appropriate feeding, efficient protein skimming, biological filtration, and water changes.
Recommended application: An efficient phosphate and silicate removal media ideal for saltwater reef aquariums requiring dependable nutrient control, improved water clarity, and reduced nuisance algae growth.
