About this coral

About this coral

Long Tentacle Neon Star Goni is a LPS “flowerpot” coral commonly sold under the Goniopora (Goniopora spp.) group name, appreciated for its long, flowing polyps that sway outward from a stony base. In a reef aquarium, it’s typically used as a centerpiece coral where its extended tentacles can be enjoyed, and where its feeding and water-flow needs can be met.

Features:

  • Long, extended polyp “flowerpot” look that moves with tank conditions (Goniopora group-level behavior).
  • Appreciated as a swaying centerpiece coral when lighting and water flow support good polyp extension.
  • Generally kept on rock where it can extend outward from its base; avoid being buried under unstable rubble.
  • Often treated as a mid-level to challenging LPS due to their sensitivity in captivity; stable conditions are important.
  • Regular feeding is commonly recommended because Goniopora are active consumers rather than relying on light alone.
  • Provide gentle to moderate, indirect flow so polyps can extend without being blasted.
  • Give nearby corals appropriate spacing because sweepers/extended tentacles can reach beyond the base in the Goniopora group.

Specifications:

  • Coral group: Goniopora (flowerpot coral), LPS (general group guidance)
  • Care level (general): Mid to difficult/challenging
  • Lighting (general): Moderate light
  • Water flow (general): Gentle to moderate, indirect
  • Feeding (general): Target feed fine foods such as phytoplankton/reef plankton; rotifers and oyster eggs are commonly used in hobby guidance for Goniopora
  • Tank placement (general): On rock with room for polyps to extend outward from the base
  • Compatibility (general): Semi-aggressive; keep space from neighboring corals due to extended tentacles/sweepers (Goniopora group guidance)
