About this fish
About this fish
Coral/Spotted Hawk is a hawkfish for the home saltwater aquarium, sold under the scientific name Cirrhitichthys oxycephalus. In the tank, this fish uses rocky and coral-covered areas as a lookout perch, making it a lively centerpiece that “watches” from the structure. It’s also commonly kept for its generally hardy nature and straightforward feeding routine, with the practical caveat that it may pick at very small mobile invertebrates.
Features:
- Perches on rocks and corals, often staying in visible areas for a lot of tank personality
- Generally hardy and comfortable in established home saltwater aquariums compared with many delicate marine fish
- Good feeding response to common hawkfish foods like frozen mysis and brine shrimp
- Typically reef safe with corals, but may eat small shrimp—choose invertebrate tankmates carefully
- Best introduced with slow acclimation and a quiet spot to settle in after arrival
Specifications:
- Scientific name: Cirrhitichthys oxycephalus
- Category: Hawkfish
- Placement in tank: Rock and coral areas where it can perch and observe
- Diet: Frozen mysis, brine shrimp, and meaty prepared foods
- Feeding frequency: Once or twice daily
- Temperament / compatibility: Generally reef safe with corals; may eat small shrimp
- Arrival handling: Acclimate slowly and allow time in a quieter area to settle
