About this fish
About this fish
Tesselata Eel Med is a marine eel for the home saltwater aquarium, sold under the name Gymnothorax favagineus. In the tank, it functions as a dramatic, rockwork-dwelling predator that typically spends much of the day tucked among caves and only emerges with its head. It’s a good choice for aquarists who can provide secure live-rock structure, manage tankmate compatibility, and feed appropriate meaty foods on a regular schedule.
Features:
- Predatory behavior: an eel that hunts and will eat suitable meaty foods in the aquarium
- Rockwork hiding habit: commonly stays most of the day in caves with only its head showing
- Needs shelter: provide plenty of caves and mature rockwork for secure resting and retreat
- Tankmate caution: avoid small fish and crustaceans that could be swallowed
- Escape prevention: cover every gap in the lid, since eels are known for escaping
- Settling guidance: acclimate slowly and offer a quiet area so the eel can adjust
Specifications:
- Scientific name: Gymnothorax favagineus
- Origin/condition: Marine aquarium livestock (saltwater)
- Diet: Meaty foods such as frozen silversides, squid, and shrimp
- Feeding frequency: A few times a week
- Temperament: Predatory; will eat small fish and crustaceans
