About this fish
About this fish
Black Bar Chromis is a saltwater damselfish/“chromis” for the home aquarium, sold under the name Chromis retrofasciata. Chromis are popular because they’re typically hardy, active swimmers that add movement and color to reef or fish-only setups. In practice, they’re a great choice when you want a more peaceful damselfish that can do well with compatible tankmates—especially when kept in a small group.
Features:
- Hardy and active, helping bring lively movement to the tank
- Generally reef-safe with corals, making it useful for mixed reef aquariums
- Chromis are usually more peaceful than many other damsels, especially when kept in groups
- As damsels mature, some can become territorial—plan tankmates with care
- Provide plenty of rock so the fish can establish comfortable space in the aquarium
- Feed small frozen foods along with quality flakes or pellets once or twice daily
- Acclimate slowly and allow a quiet settling-in period when the fish arrives
Specifications:
- Scientific name: Chromis retrofasciata
- Group temperament: Generally more peaceful than many damsels, often best kept in a group
- Reef compatibility: Reef safe with corals (general guidance)
- Recommended feeding: Small frozen foods plus quality flakes or pellets, 1–2 times daily
- Tank setup guidance: Use plenty of rock for space/territory and plan tankmates carefully
- Arrival acclimation: Acclimate slowly and provide a quieter spot to settle
