About this coral
About this coral
Crimson Splatter Favia is an LPS (large polyp stony) coral in the Favia group, commonly sold as a “brain coral” for its bumpy, brain-like texture and fleshy polyps. In a reef aquarium, it’s typically used as a display coral to add bold texture and a slow, natural growth pattern to the rockwork. Care generally follows Favia/brain coral (LPS) guidance: stable water chemistry, moderate lighting, and gentle water movement to keep the polyps comfortably extended.
Features:
- Brain-coral appearance with textured mounding and fleshy polyps that contribute strong visual depth
- LPS coral grouping—generally considered hardy compared with many SPS corals, especially when established in stable conditions
- Often responds well to feeding with appropriately sized meaty foods for LPS (in addition to normal reef feeding)
- Best kept on stable rock where the polyp surface has room to expand and receive light
- Typical preference for moderate light and gentler flow (avoids blasting) to keep tissues healthy
- Useful as a centerpiece or midground LPS coral when placed where flow and light are consistent
Specifications:
- Care level (general guidance): Moderate; best results with stable, established reef conditions
- Water flow (general guidance): Moderate to gentle, indirect/low-turbulence flow
- Lighting (general guidance): Moderate light
- Temperature (general guidance): About 72–78°F (22–26°C)
- Salinity (general guidance): ~1.023–1.025 specific gravity
- pH (general guidance): ~8.1–8.4
- Alkalinity (general guidance): ~7–11 dKH
- Calcium (general guidance): ~380–450 ppm
- Magnesium (general guidance): ~1250–1350 ppm
- Diet (general guidance): Meaty LPS/reef foods (e.g., appropriately sized frozen or prepared foods) given occasionally; relies on reef lighting and normal tank feeding as well
