Reef Tank Power-Outage Plan

Prepare Before the Lights Go Out

A power outage turns off the equipment your reef relies on. A simple plan makes it easier to protect livestock when that happens.
Step 1: Prepare backup aeration
Keep a battery-operated air pump, airline, air stone, and spare batteries ready. A compatible battery-backed circulation pump is another option. Test the equipment before an emergency.
Step 2: Prioritize water movement
During an outage, start backup aeration or circulation promptly. Gas exchange and oxygen are immediate concerns. Prioritize essential pumps when allocating limited battery power; lights can wait during a short interruption.
Step 3: Watch the temperature
Use a thermometer to track changes. In cold conditions, insulating the tank sides can slow heat loss without closing off gas exchange. Plan temperature support around your climate and expected outage duration.
Step 4: Understand your backup runtime
A UPS or power station has finite capacity. Test it with the actual equipment you intend to run. Heaters can use substantial power, so do not assume a small backup will run the entire aquarium overnight.
Step 5: Plan for a longer outage
Have a charging or alternate-power plan. If using a generator, operate it outdoors, away from doors and windows—never inside a home or garage.
Quick tip: Put your supplies and a written checklist together so someone else can follow the plan.
