The key habit: Always use reef-safe glass cleaners on the exterior of your tank, and never spray household cleaners directly on the glass—many contain ammonia that can contaminate your water even in tiny amounts.

1. Why Fritz Glass Cleaner matters

Keeping your tank glass clean isn't just for appearances—it helps you see your corals and fish clearly and spot water-quality problems early. But here's the critical difference: many household cleaners contain ammonia and other harsh chemicals which can be toxic to fish and invertebrates. Even a few drops of overspray from regular window cleaner can reach your tank water during application or while still wet on the glass.

2. What the product does

Fritz Glass Cleaner is ammonia-free and is completely safe to use on the exterior glass or acrylic of any aquarium. It removes dust, hard water stains and fingerprints with ease and makes a smoother surface for using magnetic algae scrapers. It's made from a unique streak-free and drip-free formulation that leaves a protective coating on glass or acrylic.

3. When you need it

Use Fritz Glass Cleaner when:

  • Salt stains, dust, or fingerprints build up on the outside glass
  • Your glass looks cloudy or hard-to-see-through from the outside
  • You're taking photos of your reef and want clarity
  • Your magnetic algae scraper drags and doesn't glide smoothly (the protective coating from this cleaner reduces friction)

Clean your aquarium every 1-2 weeks to prevent excessive algae buildup, though you may clean the exterior less often than the interior.

4. Preparing to clean

Gather before you start

  • Fritz Glass Cleaner (8 oz bottle)
  • Clean paper towels, newspaper, or microfiber cloths
  • Dry towels for polishing
  • A bucket or tray to catch drips (optional)

Step 1: Check your tank – Make sure the tank is not full to the very brim. There should be no water currently on or near the exterior glass where you'll apply the cleaner.

Step 2: Gather supplies – Have your paper towels and cleaner ready before you start. Working with clean supplies prevents dirt from mixing with the product.

5. Cleaning the outside glass

Step 1: Shake the bottle – Shake the Fritz cleaner gently before each use to ensure the formula is well mixed.

Step 2: Apply to the cloth, not the glass – The spray can be sprayed directly onto your aquarium, but if you're new to this, spray a small amount directly onto a clean paper towel instead of spraying the glass. This gives you more control and reduces overspray.

Step 3: Wipe the glass – Using the dampened paper towel, wipe the exterior glass in circular motions or top-to-bottom strokes. Work on one pane or section at a time.

Step 4: Dry and polish – After wiping, use a clean, dry towel to polish the glass to a shine. It helps repel dust, fingerprint smudges and water spots, so the coating it leaves behind improves both appearance and future cleaning.

Step 5: Check the seal and frame – Wipe up any excess cleaner around the frame or seals with a dry towel to prevent it from dripping into the tank.

6. Caring for your cleaner

  • Storage: Keep the bottle in a cool place, away from direct sunlight. Do not store near the tank.
  • Shelf life: A standard 8 oz bottle lasts many months with regular use.
  • Refill: When empty, replace with a fresh bottle. A single 8 oz bottle will clean your tank exterior dozens of times.

7. Mistakes to avoid

Never spray directly on the tank if you're not confident in your control—use a towel as a barrier instead. Avoid commercial glass cleaners like Windex, which contain ammonia. Ammonia is toxic to fish and corals; even a tiny bit of overspray can cause a massive tank crash.

Don't let cleaner pool or drip at the top frame where it could run down inside the tank. Polish dry immediately.

Don't mix with other cleaners. Use Fritz Glass Cleaner by itself; don't combine it with vinegar, rubbing alcohol, or other products.

Avoid the inside glass with this product. This cleaner is formulated for exterior use only. For the interior, use a clean microfiber cloth dampened with a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and RODI water.

What you notice and what to check next

What you notice What to check next
Glass streaks remain after cleaning You may not have enough cleaner on the cloth; wipe with more product and dry with a fresh towel
Cleaner ran down inside the tank during application Perform a 25% water change as a precaution; watch for any fish or coral stress over the next 12 hours
Magnetic scraper still drags after cleaning The glass may have accumulated organic film underneath; use a magnetic cleaner on the interior, or allow the protective coating to build up over 2–3 applications
Fingerprints return quickly This is normal; reapply every 1–2 weeks. The coating reduces, not eliminates, dust and oils
Cloudy haze on exterior glass Make sure you're using clean towels and complete the drying step; haze usually means incomplete drying or dirty cloths
