About this fish
Smoothhound Shark MLg (Expert) is a marine shark sold under the scientific name Mustelus californicus. In an aquarium setting, it’s typically chosen by experienced hobbyists who want an active, swimming centerpiece fish and can provide a stable, well-filtered saltwater system with appropriate feeding. As a true shark, it will be a strong swimmer and benefits from aquascape design that leaves open room for movement while keeping livestock safety in mind.
Features:
- Identified as Mustelus californicus, a smoothhound-type shark.
- Marine-only livestock intended for saltwater aquariums.
- A predatory, carnivorous fish that generally requires meaty foods rather than algae-based diets.
- Naturally active swimmer, best suited to tanks with ample open swimming space.
- Often managed as an “expert” item due to the husbandry expectations placed on large, high-activity marine predators.
- Best used with experienced planning for filtration capacity, water quality stability, and appropriate tankmates.
Specifications:
- Scientific name: Mustelus californicus
- Type: Shark (marine fish)
- Diet (general): Carnivorous; typically fed meaty foods
- Care level (listing context): Expert
- Temperament (general): Active and predatory; plan tankmates accordingly
