About this fish

About this fish

Naso Tang is a saltwater tang from the genus Naso (scientific name: Naso lituratus). In a home reef aquarium, this active grazer is typically used to help keep algae under control while adding a bold, swimming presence to the display. Because tangs are constantly active and need adequate space to swim and graze, the Naso Tang is best suited to established, well-maintained tanks with room for open water.

Features:

  • Active, open-water swimmer that grazes algae throughout the day
  • Best kept with plenty of swimming space in a long tank
  • Feeds readily on algae sheets and seaweed, with additional options like frozen and pellet foods
  • Has a sharp spine near the tail; handle carefully and avoid sudden size/presence changes
  • Can be territorial with other tangs, so plan tankmates thoughtfully
  • Generally considered reef compatible with corals when aquarium conditions and feeding are appropriate
  • Arrives best with slow acclimation to reduce stress, then a calm period to settle in

Specifications:

  • Care level: Intermediate (larger, active grazer that needs stable, reef-style conditions and consistent feeding)
  • Scientific name: Naso lituratus
  • Temperament: Active; may show territorial behavior toward other tangs
  • Diet: Algae sheets and seaweed daily; also commonly fed frozen and pellet foods
  • Tank requirements: Long tank with plenty of open swimming room
  • Reef compatibility: Generally reef safe with corals
  • Adult size: Can grow large (plan for long-term tank capacity)
  • Temperature: ~72–78°F (22–26°C)
  • Salinity: ~1.020–1.025 specific gravity
  • pH: ~8.1–8.4
  • Alkalinity: ~7–11 dKH
  • Calcium: ~380–450 mg/L
