Clown Tang
Description
Clown Tang (Acanthurus lineatus) The Clown Tang is one of the most vibrant and striking surgeonfish, instantly recognizable by its bold horizontal blue and yellow stripes and streamlined body. Native to the reefs of the Indo-Pacific, this tang is an active swimmer that requires plenty of open space and strong water movement to thrive.
Like other surgeonfish, the Clown Tang has sharp caudal spines near its tail, which it may use for defense—so caution is advised when handling. It is a herbivore, grazing on algae throughout the day, making it a valuable addition for controlling algae growth in large reef systems. However, it can be territorial and aggressive toward other tangs or similarly shaped fish, especially in smaller aquariums.
Best kept in tanks of at least 250 gallons or more, the Clown Tang is recommended for advanced aquarists due to its size, activity level, and temperament. When cared for properly, it becomes a dazzling centerpiece fish with unmatched color and energy.
