The Sailfin Tang is a striking and elegant saltwater fish, easily recognized by its tall dorsal and anal fins, which it can expand to dramatically increase its apparent size. Its oval-shaped body features a deep brown base color accented with five vertical yellow bands, each filled with intricate patterns. Light freckles mark its snout, while the tail transitions from vivid yellow to soft blue highlights.

This species requires a large aquarium—180 gallons or more—to accommodate its active swimming behavior and adult size. While generally peaceful toward most tank mates, the Sailfin Tang can be aggressive toward conspecifics or other tangs, especially if introduced at different times. For best results, introduce similar species simultaneously to minimize territorial behavior.

Though they will consume some meaty foods, Sailfin Tangs are primarily herbivores and need a diet rich in marine-based algae. Regular feedings of seaweed will support their immune system, reduce aggression, and promote overall vitality. Offer dried seaweed attached to a rock or a veggie clip at least three times per week.
