Convict Tang (SM)

Convict Tang (Acanthurus triostegus)
Also known as the Convict Surgeonfish

The Convict Tang is a striking and active marine fish, easily recognized by its silvery-white body adorned with six bold, vertical black stripes—resembling the markings of a classic convict uniform. Compared to other tangs, it has relatively small peduncle spines near the tail. Its peaceful nature and distinct appearance make it a valuable addition to both reef and fish-only aquariums.

This species requires a 125-gallon or larger tank with plenty of open swimming space. While generally peaceful, Convict Tangs should not be housed with other tang species, as they may become targets for aggression. However, multiple Convict Tangs can be kept together if introduced simultaneously, allowing them to establish a natural hierarchy without territorial disputes.

There are no visible differences between males and females, and breeding them in captivity is extremely challenging. The fry remain planktonic for extended periods, making them vulnerable to filtration systems and difficult to rear in typical home aquariums.

Like all tangs, the Convict Tang may eat meaty foods offered in a community setting, but it is essential to provide a diet rich in marine-based seaweed and algae. This enhances immune function, reduces stress-related aggression, and supports long-term health. Feed dried seaweed using a veggie clip or tied to a rock at least three times per week. Quality options include Sea Veggies, Seaweed Salad, and Ocean Nutrition products.

With proper care and a well-maintained environment, the Convict Tang is a hardy, eye-catching species that brings activity and balance to larger marine systems.
