The Purple Tang is a stunning saltwater fish, easily recognized by its deep blue to vibrant purple body, bright yellow tail, and yellow accents on its pectoral fins. Once native solely to the coral reefs of the Red Sea, its range now extends to the Arabian Sea, Gulf of Aden, and waters off Sri Lanka. While typically solitary, small schools may be found in the southern Red Sea. Adults can grow up to 10 inches in length.

Highly sought after for its vivid coloration, the Purple Tang is a prized addition to both reef and large fish-only aquariums. When housed in a properly sized tank with strong lighting, open swimming space, and ample hiding spots, this species can thrive and display its full beauty. However, it is known for its territorial and aggressive behavior, especially toward other tangs or fish with similar body shapes—particularly those within the Zebrasoma genus.

Although they will consume meaty foods, it is essential to provide a herbivore-based diet rich in marine algae. Regular feedings of seaweed will help boost their immune system, reduce aggression, and support overall health. Offer dried seaweed on a veggie clip or tied to a rock at least three times per week.
